cards and culinary delights...

Wanna know a juicy little secret about my marriage?  We're friends right?  I can tell you. Okay, here it goes...Andrew Henry and I play Cribbage almost every single day.  What?  Not what you were expecting?  I know, it's not juicy and it's not even really a secret, many people know this, but it was fun while it lasted.

We play Cribbage while we eat breakfast and then a round or two after dinner. We have 10 game tournaments and championships and keep year-long running tallies. So far, the 2010 tally is 2 tournaments to 1.  I won't say who has been getting schooled but you can probably guess (I'm red and he's green).  I've decided I win because the best hand is worth 29 points and my birthday is on the 29th - it's fate.

We like games.  We will play almost any board game  - love 'em all (okay maybe not Scrabble).  Mostly, we play cards.  We play ALOT of cards in this family.  We play every night when we visit my parents (they live about 2 hours north of us) and every night when they visit us.  We have played in airports (you may have seen us), in airplanes, hotels, hospitals (I've spent a bit of time there), cruise ships, outside while waiting to get into a restaurant - you get the idea.  Our game of choice for years has been Pinochle.

We also play every Friday night with our friends Al & Ewa.  Al of the loooong flight to Poland and Ewa of the "gives great presents like olive oil" fame.  Lately, we've been playing a kind of made up version of the card game "golf".  I say made up because the way we were taught does not coincide with the rules I read online, but it's very close.  We also add a few of our own rules, just to spice things up a bit.  Last Friday night, our cast of characters was Andrew Henry, my parents, Ewa (Al was still recovering) and me.  We played our version of golf.  In our version, my Dad had a great hand.  That's a negative 2 score, like the real game of golf, a low score is good.

However, this is the King Kamehameha hand.  The one we thought nobody would ever get.  The one we decided you would receive a whopping minus 50 points for (game changing) because nobody could ever get it hand.  The one that will now be talked about for years to come (because I got it and I will be reminding everyone for a very, very long time)..............

Oh, I almost forgot, we have a culinary theme running through Everton Terrace this week!  Let me show you our "snacks" from last Friday night's card games.  I made some of this...

Followed by some of these.  I did not make these, I served these (Trader Joe's frozen section - quite nice)...

And, because my Mother is English, I also made this Trifle.  Funny thing is, she is the only one who didn't eat any.  My British Mother does not like Trifle (neither does my daughter).  That's two secrets for you all today!  We're on a roll here folks.

That was our last game night.  Lots of food, lots of laughing and lots of fun with friends.  Do you play games?  What's your favorite game?

Your pics of food make my mouth water! All of your pics are great! The black and white cribbage board with red and green playing pieces is so creative. Do you shoot pics for a magazine or such?

Thank you. NO - I did get a degree in photography about a million years ago and haven't used it in a long time. Feels good to take it out and play with it again.

Balderdash in one of my favorite games... I always lose because my family knows me too well... BUT. I love it anyway. All card games (except Pinochle). And yes, your food does make my mouth water as well. I hope to have some in the near(ish) future!

It's odd. I did not play board games much growing up. We did play poker for nickels and dimes for a while. There were also games of Gin with may Dad. I do enjoy them all now even though I'm often on the losing end. ;-) Food makes it all better!

Food, AH, make almost everything better (especially the kind your lovey makes)! We used to play cards ALL the time - something called "tick" that the hubby's folks were addicted to but that was BL (before littles). Looking forward to the day when they go off to bed and there is still enough of me left to play with confidence and strategy :-D
We too are a house of game players - we LOVE them - all shapes and sizes. I have vague memories of playing RISK for hours on end back during our Rugby days. My dirty little secret....I have NEVER played Monopoly! I know, I should start my own support group.
But for now, we will continue with Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders and "war" the card game and Go Fish.......hey, at least it's cards, and we gotta start them somewhere!

I like games, especially playing them with family! I have been saying for a long time now, "there is always something good to eat at Jeanette's". She didn't inherit her love of cooking from me! She once gave me a mug, printed on it are the words 'my favorite things to make for dinner are reservations!'
