cry me a river...

Onions.  The bittersweetness of the onion.  Sweet because they taste good, raw or cooked.  There are a million uses for an onion.  There are so many varieties of onions.  I like 'em red, white, yellow, green, spring, shallot, cooked, raw.

I don't even mind chopping them, which is good because I do this several times a week.

What I do mind about onions, the "bitter" part of bittersweet,  is the crying.  My eyes are ridiculous when I'm chopping them.  It's not as bad as when I watched the movie "Cinema Paradiso".  No, not that bad.  I was weeping like I had chopped onions all day by the final scene.  I gave the daughter that movie and I don't think it got to her the way it did me.  This is strange because we are freakishly similiar about those things.  I should get it back from her and watch it again.  Have you seen that movie?

Onions, we were talking about onions weren't we?  The onions and the river of tears that fill my kitchen when I chop them.  I wear glasses but they aren't enough of a barrier.  I've done the "chop under running water" thing and it does work, but the onions run all over the place and that drives me crazy.  You know the best thing to do about this?

Goggles.  Have you seen the fancy onion chopping goggles like these?  I don't have those fancy kitchen onion goggles; mostly because I can think of lots of things I'd rather do with $20.  I wear Andrew Henry's safety goggles from the garage.  There is sawdust embedded in the crevices and the strap is a bit loosey goosey but they do the trick I tell ya! They are much cheaper and I'm a gal who LOVES a bargain.  A bargain might be on my top 10 list of things I love.  You can find the bargain goggles here.

I was going to ask you if you had onion goggles but I think I'd rather know your favorite way to eat onions!

1st T and I both LOVE "Cinema Paradiso". Yep - onion chopping tears!
2nd - I love onions almost every way I can get them too - though they are not so fond of me - I find them worth the sacrifice.
I love them especially caramelized with a tad of raw sugar and drizzled over most anything. Mmmmmm - I think it must be lunchtime here......

I'm pretty sure those are vintage goggles you have there. I think they were my Dad's and some of that sawdust in the crevices is likely from the good 'ol midwest.

'Cinema Paradiso', no, I'm rather sure I haven't seen it, don't think it would appeal to better half.
Glad I have just had lunch, I can almost smell onions and that smell can certainly give me an appetite. I used to like them any way they were prepared but I must say I now prefer raw rather than cooked.

Once again, great pics! I take the easy way out, I buy the frozen, chopped ones to use in cooking! I prefer raw to cooked but I think most of all I like the smell of onions when they are being cooked.
