my favorite place...

I love to visit old train stations and one of my favorites is Union Station in Chicago.  The character, design and aura of days gone by captivates me.  As soon as I walk through the door, my imagination soars.  There is amazing design and detail in every nook and cranny.

I see the wear on steps and imagine the people who have walked them.  Close your eyes and you can almost hear the hustle and bustle of the travellers.   I imagine the clothes they wore.  Oh the clothes, when women wore gloves and men wore hats - swoon.

I imagine the craftsman who built this amazing piece of art and I bow down to them - metaphorically of course.  Come follow me to the coolest place in Chicago and marvel at the beauty and design of Union Station...

I hope you enjoyed this magical place as much as I always do.

"piece of art" is a good way to describe it. Think I'll stop by Grand Central Station today and look a little more closely. I've always liked it but I think now, there must be a million details I'm missing. Very nice images, each on their own, and together as a collection.

Okay, if I ever go back to Chicago I'm not missing that train station, it's gorgeous! (As are your photos!)

Our personal tele-portation device - that is what we have here today! Love the purity of the classical architecture and the attention to every little detail! - Corinthian columns are my favorite. But I think the photo that speaks most to me are the worn steps......the shear number of people that have to have traveled them and the length of time to wear such a surface in such a way....and like you I imagine the scenes from days gone by.....(sigh)

Such a beautiful building! The lamp standards are exquisite. Yes, imagining the people in bygone days and the hats, the gloves etc. Hard to imagine today's fashions being mourned by future generations... Fantastic photos!

Thank you Moomer - when I'm in love with the subject, it shows in the photographs. That's why all of yours come out so well.

It is an amazing place.
The architect was Daniel Burnham who worked on the Chicago Worlds Fair. I didn't know Burnham did the design when we were there. I just looked it up. It figures though. He had his hands in all of the best early Chicago buildings.

I would love to go to Chicago again soon. I've only been once, and it was for a writers' conference, so I mostly saw the inside of the hotel (with a few excursions). My favorite poet in the world lives there (Li-Young Lee), and I have two friends there now . . . sounds like a great next destination spot. :)

I can see why this is your favorite place. It looks like a movie set, so beautiful. I would never think to visit a train station if I didn't need to, maybe I should expand my "must see" list a bit!

Unbelievable! If you don't mind me asking, what kind of camera do you use? I'm looking to get a new one, would like my stuff to come out like this. Thanks.
