things i love thursday...

We've had guest posts from two of our four lovely women this summer and this is kind of the third.  My lovely daughter Meghan and I decided to do her guest post "interview style".  I made up a list of questions.  My stuff is in black and hers is in pink (which I THOUGHT was her favorite color).

Let me introduce you to the thing (okay person) I love this Thursday.

Meghan
Seattle, WA
24 years old
Honors Bachelor's degree Biology and Society
2nd year law school student
speaks Spanish
understands Romanian and can still count to 7 and order ice-cream (what else would you need?)

1. You have been a voracious reader all your life. What is your favorite book from childhood, teenage years and most recent?
a. Childhood: Catherine, Called Birdy: I read it probably 100 times, no exaggeration. (she did)

b. Teenage: Til We Have Faces, CS Lewis. It’s still one of my favorites.
c. Right now: Pillars of the Earth. It was such a beautiful story and I LOVE historical fiction.

2. Of all the countries you’ve visited so far, which would you most like to visit again and why?
a. TOUGH question. There aren’t any I wouldn’t go back to, but Spain, I think. There are so many parts of the country I didn’t see. I loved the people, the language, the food, everything.

3. If you could go back and talk to your “about to enter high-school” self, what would you say?
a. It will never matter if you were popular. Hang out with the girls you like.

b. Dating is way better as you get older. Don’t bother now.
c. Study the things you aren’t good at, not just the ones you are. Geometry, anyone?
d. Listen to your mother. You will learn, painfully, that she is always right. She wants the best for you, and nothing else.  This surprised me, being the mother and all.

4. Other than being eaten by sharks – what is your greatest fear?
a. Disappointing the people I love.  I kinda thought she would put this.

5. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
a. This is the real world even if it seems like it’s not. You can’t change other people’s minds, but if you’re lucky, you can change your own. Oh, and wear sunscreen.

6. What is your least favorite thing to do?
a. Anything athletic. Sorry Momma, but it’s true.   I hold out hope (I thought for sure she would say put away the laundry)...

7. What 3 things would you grab in a fire?
a. My laptop

b. A statue my Nana gave me
c. As much of my artwork as I could carry (does that count as 1 thing?)

8. When are you the most happy?
a. When I’m with my family (Mom, Dad, Grami and Grampi) or with my two best friends (Maia and Kathryn)

9. What inspires you?
a. Good teachers, in whatever form they come

10. What can you not do that you would most like to do?
a. Sing… Well I can sing, but it’s not pretty and nobody in their right mind wants to hear it. I’m so envious of musical talent.

11. What super power would you most like to have and why?
a. The ability to transport myself. I love to travel more than anything, so saving on cost and time in planes would be perfection.

12. Describe your perfect day.
a. Any day with my family, my two best friends and my boyfriend. Hopefully it would involve delicious food, a foreign country, and laughing. But time with these people makes whatever we’re doing pretty wonderful

Favorites
Color - I know you thought I was going to say pink, but I think it’s turquoise. (mother is in SHOCK)
Song - Of all time? Tequila Sunrise, The Eagles. Right now? Say Hey, Michael Franti
Movie - No way I could choose; I have varied taste, from Babette’s Feast to Hitch to The Hangover… so I’ll go with my childhood favorites: The Little Mermaid and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Period in history - Ancient Egypt
Food - Mrs. Manriquez’s spaghetti and meatballs. No, it’s not a brand. She is a lovely, dear family friend and she makes the best Italian food of all time.
Dream Job - Something where I could read all day, maybe a book editor?

Dislikes
Color - Orange… Which my mother loves (I like all colors - okay not so much yellow or purple)
Song - Who Let the Dogs Out? WHY did anyone ever think that was a good song? I’m sorry that it’s in your head now.
Movie -  Russian Ark. No, you haven’t heard of it, and no, don’t bother. (2nd worst on my list)
Period in History - That’s interesting. I can’t think of one I specifically don’t like, except perhaps the colonial period. The subjugation of indigenous culture all over the world makes me sad.
Food - Fish
Job - Athletic trainer?  (this made me laugh out loud)

Well my friends - you now have a face and a bit of the personality behind our four lovely women - Seattle.

Here is your question - #10 - what can you NOT do that you would most like to do?

That was SO fun. I do wonder about all these women and what they're like. I like some of the same things and I hate fish too. I've never read a book more than once. Wait, my answer is I'd like to be able to do acrobatics. Is that weird? I was never able to and it looks really fun to me. I loved this interview. Your daughter was a really cute little kid.

Oh! I loved this post! Good questions! One would have to be very brave to subject oneself to these questions... kudos.
I would love to be able to play the piano!

I enjoyed reading this. I especially loved #9 because i'm a teacher by profession(who is also passionate about design:-)). Anyway, i actually decided to become a teacher because i had a great teacher who was quite inspiring.

Hello - I am new here and loved it from the first heading.. What a great interview with your daughter. I loved her answers and got teary seeing the picture of her as a little girl vs the young lady that is now answering these (tough) questions so sincerely for her mother..

Your question.. Hmm.. Something I can't do but wish I could do would be to be able to heal pain, illness and sickness.

Off to explore more now.

xx Charlotta

Your daughter is smart and delightful! I would choose to go back and live each day more fully and recognize how many special moments I have had/am having. Does this make sense?

I know the answer to question #10. I can not, but would LOVE to learn to play the bass. Electric bass, you know? Would love to wear shades and play the bass, maybe as part of a reggae band.

I LOVED this! We have SO many things in common - guess the family link is stronger than I thought :-D (One day we will sit and chat about all the similarities!) But - I LOVE athletics and sports, which is fortunate considering my little flock. I am so proud to know you girlie - and I KNOW you do your Momma proud! Such wisdom beyond your years - such a blessing.

As for me - I am with kroney - I would LOVE to be able to play the piano.

Bravo to the interviewer and interviewee! That was really fun to read. Great job. I learned some things too.

Now, I have to bring up the comment regarding "the subjugation of indigenous culture..." Who talks like that? ;-)

My daughter. That's who.

I forgot to answer the question.

I wish I could play the drums. I don't want to learn how to play the drums. I just want to know how to play the drums.

This was so sweet. The "wear sunscreen" answer reminded me of the Baz Luhrman song Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen. Your daughter is just lovely and your relationship is enviable.

My answer to #10 would also be sing. Or maybe dance.

How on earth did I miss this when you originally posted it? My favorite of your blog posts to date. Your daughter is clearly magnificent, and I suspect she and I would get along wonderfully. :) Congrats on raising such a lovely girl!

jeanette from everton terrace said...

Yes Claire, I feel certain you would. If you are ever in Seattle, I'm sure she would love a call.

I can't believe it's not pink too! But I do see the affinity toward turquoise. Or maybe Tiffanys signature color ;)

We should all interview each-other like this in families, from time to time and save them for rainy days. We love to pull out old camp letters and drawings. We laugh until the tears run down our faces. Its so much fun! Thanks for a brilliant idea!
