things i love thursday...

I've tweaked things up today.  The "thing" for this Thursday afternoon is not a something but a someone.  My lifelong friend is coming to visit tomorrow.  You all know her as "California - friend" from our Monday morning  four lovely women series.  We have been friends for almost 40 years.  We started kindegarten together,  she was partially responsible for me meeting Andrew Henry, is my daughter's godmother and was the maid of honor at our wedding.  We have always been...

Oh this book.  What can I say about this other childhood friend?  I loved this book when I was little.  California friend and I once performed it as a play for my mother.  I knew it by heart.  I played "Bear".  I played Bear because I wanted to be Bear - I really did.  The story is delightful, Duck is a happy housekeeper (didn't want to be Duck) and Bear is a happy cook.  They celebrate their differences and are the best of friends.

I wanted to live in Bear's kitchen.  It thrilled me to no end, the thought of making "honey cake" or "nut pie" in this kitchen was just beyond beyond.  Don't you just love it!  I know my mother is cringing - she's a duck.

Here's the funny thing.  I did turn out to be Bear.  I have my own version of his kitchen now.  I am not now, nor will I ever be Duck, would rather cook than clean any day!  I connected with Bear, all those years ago, for a reason.  I think if you get stuck,  if perhaps, you have misplaced your joy, try looking back.  What did you like to do most as a child?  Is there a way to bring some of that into your life again?

One of my favorite things to do as a child, was to laugh with my best friend, and I'm getting to that again tomorrow.  I might just bake her a treat.  I probably won't clean my house - she won't care.  We'll be eating and laughing.  We are always laughing.

Two good friends - hard to beat.
How about you - are you a duck or a bear?

I really loved this post Jeanette. Really. It has struck a nerve with me today. I've been comtemplating my career choices and you've given me much to think about. I'm a Bear. My cleaning lady is a Duck, ha.

I kind of remember this book! I think my older sister had it. Weird. Old friends are the best friends aren't they? I'm a duck. I'd love to have a Bear in my life. Neither of us can cook. That kitchen would drive me CRAZY!

Yes, don't like to cook, don't 'love' to clean but I would rather clean than cook. I don't think I need to warn the young people of today about the hazards of keeping everything in the house tidy and spotless, as athletes pay a price later in life for their exertions, so do fanatical homemakers. Today, doing a quarter of the housework in the same length of time I cleaned a whole house in the past, there isn't a muscle in my body which doesn't ache. Kudos to today's less fussy, happy-go-lucky, better-things-to-do homemakers. My wonderful daughter once bought me a mug. I didn't ever drink out of it, I use bone china for my tea. However it was rather perfect, as the motto written on it was "My favorite things to make for dinner are reservations!" Love that gal!

I am a bit of both. No surprise there to those who know me. Some days more Bear - others more Duck. Some days - a nice balance. I could give over being Duck to a cleaning lady - quite easily, but would never give over being Bear. Henley is right though, loads to think about here. Henley - do what you love - love what you do! Keep us posted girl!

You two have fun! The thought of you together makes me smile.

Definitely Bear. Trouble is, when I visit friends and the first question they ask is "What's for dinner?," they are not asking me to guess what we are having, they are asking me what I plan to cook for them! Bears Rule...albeit sometimes reluctantly. :)

What a wonderful kids book :) I think I'm a duck with certain people, and a bear with others. So what animal does that make me?
