things i love thursday...

You know I always come back to the food!  I can't say I've always loved figs.  Other than an occasional Fig Newton during my childhood (NO thank you), I don't know that I ever really tasted figs.  Well, until about 7 years ago when they fell from the sky and enchanted my tastebuds.  This is how I like them best.  This brand, straight out of the container, with some of my favorite cheese, Manchego.  Flat out delish!

Also enjoy them chopped on a frittata, in a salad or on a savory pizza.  I chop them and put them in fudge, because everything is better with chocolate.  Goes nicely in banana bread too.  Ahhhh, banana bread, how my now gluten-free body misses you............Fresh and dried figs.  My grown-up self loves them.  You?

You know, I LOVE fruit, but I'm still not entirely convinced by figs . . . they sound delicious the way you've described them (with manchego), so maybe I'll give that a whirl. In general, I choose most other fruits before figs. Guess maybe it's time to change that?!

Love Figs! Loads of them here in the southeast - wild turkey is the most popular locally grown, but I prefer the missions as well. We use fig preserves on toast (yes with gluten)and toss them into most things like you do as well. I love them in salads in tandem with dried cranberries, sun-dried tomatoes and with chevre goat cheese on crackers, pizza, salads etc. I also like to caramelize them with a sweet onion (Vidalia to those of us on this side of the Mississippi)and mound them onto brats, etc. We also toss them in wherever a raisin would be appropriate - my boys like them WAY better.(And don't think you've hidden that Trader Joe's label girlie!)

Ha ha, I wasn't trying to hide the TJoe's label. I know better than to try and get one past you. Carmelize with onions, new to me, will be trying!

I've always been a fan. When I was young I loved those fig newton's you scorned. Yum!

Pizza? Never thought of that but I guess if they taste good with cheese, why not? Will Pizza Hut do that???? Kidding.

Fig trees grow all over Western Australia, so much so that we natives can't give them away. Having said that, the cockatoos luuuve them! Only trouble is they've never learned any table manners and fly away screeching, satiated, and scornful of the fist-waving from the frustrated householder who has to clean detrious. As a child I ate dried figs and quite liked them but am happy to leave the fresh ones to our local fauna.

I don't mind figs but I prefer dates, however they are quite fattening!

My grandma's neighbor used to have a fig tree and would bring over a bag for me when I visited and they were delicious! Man, I hadn't thought of that memory in years.
