things i love thursday...

I love photography.  I started taking photos with a 110 camera when I was a little girl.  I took photography in high school and got my first real camera, a Pentax K100 for my 17th birthday, which I LOVED.  It was my constant companion while I got a Bachelor's Degree in Photography in college.

My old camera was all manual, I learned that way and I liked that way.  Then came digital.  This era of digital was new and confusing to me.  I do not possess the gadget techno gene (can barely program my phone).  We have gone through a few digital cameras but they have all been simple point and shoots.  I stopped taking artsy photos years ago - the only thing we used a camera for was vacation shots so point and shoots work well for us.  Then I started a jewelry business (and oh yes, a blog).

When your business is online, your photographs are everything.  New business means all the cashola goes for jewelry and supplies.  Almost all the images you see on this blog (and every one you see if you stop by my shop) have been taken with this simple point and shoot camera.  The only exceptions are when I use some of my older images for the Friday photos- those were probably taken with my trusty old Pentax back in the day.

The above photo was taken with Andrew Henry's phone which might actually have a nicer camera in it than my actual camera.  Don't get me wrong, I read all the comments and reviews of the digital SLR's and am counting the days until I make the decision and bite the bullet but until then, this little point and shoot camera works for me and it's the thing I love this Thursday.

What about you?  Do you have a fancy schmancy or a point and shoot?

Just a Sony Cybershot, nothing fancy. There are 3 things I seem to break or drop that I don't spend money on: cameras, sunglasses, earrings. I think it would be a blast to take a photography class but honestly with a cheap digital camera and editing software anyone can take amazing pics. nowadays. xo

Well, your pics are gorgeous, whatever you're taking them with.
You do sound a little like me, though. I use a Nikon point and shoot while I 'evaluate' the mac daddy digital SLR's. I've been doing that for almost 3 years now! It's so hard to commit. :)

Mine's a little Canon PowerShot point and shoot.

Your photos are fabulous! Even with a point and shoot your talent is obvious! I used to have a Pentax, now I have a point and shoot digital and an old one at that, fits my needs. I agree, AH's phone takes as fine a pic as my camera.

Mine is somewhere in between - I can set it to point and shoot, or make it fully manual. But, let us not forget that there is an artistry to the setting, staging and capturing of the subject matter - and you my friend, have a gift. I think you could do just as well with a phone's camera :-D

hi ET :) i can relate. i have a little digital camera that i now love, but was resistant to at first. because i used to have a manual camera that i inherited and i loved the way the photos looked. i never exactly "learned" how to use it. i just experimented. which was so fun. there is something to having no idea how those pictures are going to turn out and having to wait until the film develops, then opening that envelope and seeing all those photos...

thanks for reminding me of this.

i do love to take pictures, and every now and then, i do take one i'm proud of, or see one i love. i love photography, but never talk about it.

thanks for reminding me of this too! :)

hugs and love to you!!!

I admire those who can really capture the moment with a camera. I am more of an oops I accidently chopped a head off in that one or ummm I am not sure what that is kind of person... sigh

Point and shoot which is just fine for me. I had to ask an 8 year old (who was standing in line) to take a picture of my then 5 year old driving a go cart. I handed her my cell phone and whalah, picture on said cell phone. My daughter keeps changing my wall paper (she's 8 and does not have a phone and won't get one til she's much older-like 10-NOT) I'm not a big fan of the computer world but, at times it is convenient (like now). So, you take the good with the bad and try to keep your garden weeded (oh sorry, still thinking about Laura's garden)Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!

Jeanette, my degree is in photography as well. It was also back in the darkroom days. Digital totally threw me for a loop. I just can't fall in love with it the way I did with film. I have a fancy pants SLR but I just keep it on mostly auto settings. I think the auto metering on my camera is pretty bad but it's just easier when my constant campanion is 4 and I primarily use it to photograph her. Someday, I'd love to take the time to really learn digital and hopefully fall in love with it. Or maybe just return to film. You know, like when the 4 year old isn't 4. Who knows.

I don't have the talent for an SLR, but it's clear that with that talent, the camera doesn't matter too much.

I have my Canon PAS, my fiance's Nikon PAS and I do own a Canon Rebel XS. I love my big camera but keep one of the PAS in my purse at all times :)

This is more of a blow than your amazing house. I can't believe you took that picture with a tiny point and shoot. The degree makes sense to me, should have known. I suppose Monet could have painted with a toothbrush. I agree with MJM, with your talent, the camera doesn't matter much. Looking forward to seeing what you with an SLR.

I've been taking pics all my life, too. Took me awhile to get into digital but I'm all the way there now. I use a Nikon coolpix with a decent zoom. I tend to correct color and stuff in photoshop. Love my cheap little camera! It is always with me.

There's an old saying; "it's not the arrow, it's the Indian". I think it's true to a point, but there is certainly a time when the technology gives you a boost.

You take great photos using that little digital. However, I know that when you do get the 'big boy' camera, the photos will be even better!

Great, I've been blaming my less than stellar pictures on the fact I don't have a big SLR with a monster zoom. I've looked through your amazing pictures and realized I can't do that anymore. Bummer.

Your photos are so great! I really want to learn photography, I think I'd be good at it, and it's frustrating to post so many beautiful photos and not be able to take any myself! XO!

i used to LOVE my little sony. had 2 super light weight ones. now i have a heavier camera and i don't want to drag it along everywhere. i say stick with convenience. i REALLY want an iphone then i would have it with me all the time.
i don't even know what an SLR is!
