the advent scroll...

HAPPY DECEMBER!

My daughter is 24 and lives in Seattle but she is an only child so yes, I still do an Advent Calendar for her.  Here's the thing, she doesn't like sweets and her Advent box has tiny doors and no room for much inside so.........scrolls of course.

You see, my girl loves words and quotes, she's been writing down quotes all her life.  She had a journal when she was little that I think was only filled with quotes she heard and liked.  We both appreciate the power of words.

I try to find quotes I think she will like and possibly hasn't read before, that is the hard part - I think she's usually read most of them but doesn't say anything.  I type them out in different fonts and colors, cut them in strips, roll them up into mini scrolls and tie them with a satin ribbon.  She keeps them in a jar afterward.

This is our thing.  What's yours?

What a clever thoughtful advent! I only get an advent for my youngest who requested a lego one - it's actually very cute.

What a fun tradition! I send my college guys cards with puns all the time. The more the pun makes you roll your eyes and grin - the better!

This is such a sweet and special idea, and it seems so perfectly suited to your daughter. I love that. I am going to have to tuck this idea away for when Abby is a little bigger. I feel like she may be heading in that direction. Right now, she points out words that she likes the sound of. She say "Mama, say that word again. I like the sound of it. What does it mean?" We're still beginning but there are a few things that are becomming "our thing" - a trip downtown to see all the holiday madness and decorations and counting how many "sparkles" we see on any given car ride are two.

I love this idea - might have to borrow it as my boys get older!

We have an advent calendar gifted to my boys 6 years ago by a dear friend. It has Santa, a Christmas tree, jingle bells and snow on it and we move a little reindeer along the date pockets.

Would love something more along the true meaning of Christmas lines, as would my sweet eldest boy, but it is fun and works for the two of them.

We also mark my little one's birthday on the pocket for the 23rd as that is an important day for us as well!

The trouble with oys is they grow up! So nowadays I just get myself an advent calender. Never ever one with chocolates just little pictures inside. Keeps me happy anyway!

OMG that is the coolest idea ever!!
I adore it!
I want to adopt that tradition now even though my son, an only child too, is 19 and in college... I don't think it's too late to start do you?
In fact, I think it's the perfect time to pass on these priceless words of wisdom.
You are amazing Jeanette!!
Thanks for sharing this precious tradition!

What a great idea...

We tried the Advent Calendar but never really kept it up.
When my children were younger we did the 12 Days of Christmas. They would find a small treat or a note where we go out that day... walk on the beach, lunch out, look at a Christmas display, watch a movie or play a board game.
That seemed to be more manageable and we had fun times together right before Christmas.

cheers, parsnip

That is really cute! I used to have an advent calendar every year that my dad would buy me - full of chocolate for my serious sweet tooth.

I'm hosting a giveaway on my blog - come check it out!

So incredibly sweet. The more I hear about your daughter, the more I think she and I would be immediate friends! (except for the "doesn't like sweets" thing--ha!). What a touching tradition y'all have. :)

You are the best mom ever. I only have one left, my 29 year old daughter. I used to send her a Playmobil advent calendar every year, but have been lax for a few years. I'll go get another one out. Cherish the one you have. You made my heart skip a beat. Ann
